Conversano - Cathedral of Saint Benedict

Stone lions guard the main entrance to the Church of Saint Benedict, Conversano's cathedral.

I agree with Hilda...very strange looking animals...especially their mouth expressions...toothless, it appears. Maybe they're really old lions? But then what good are they as guards.

It's a conundrum!

Love the shots! The cathedral looks very dark and dreary?

Those lions are fabulous. Are they sandstone? I love lion portals on Italian churches, but I've never seen one wasn't medieval before.
