Winter Beach

The Prima Cala beach is much more peaceful and infinitely cleaner during the winter months.

What about those fuzzy trees? Sometimes it seems like all the trees around here come out fuzzy in photos. Olive trees are terribly difficult to photograph (check out that silvery green blur in yesterday's shot) and these Marine pines are no better.

Maybe Molfetta's motto should be "Town of the Fuzzy Trees." No one would back me up on this, I know. Especially since Molfettans call their city the "Paese delle Belle Donne" which means the "Town of Beautiful Women." What would you choose for a motto...beautiful women or fuzzy trees?

Windy Days

Another period without adsl or phone line...ugh! In the meantime, we have had some very cold and windy weather here in Molfetta.

Reef - Up Close and Personal

The majority of Molfettans profess a distinct dislike of sand. It's "dirty." It works its way into everything, your towel, your hair, your beach bag, your swimming trunks... But I say, at least it's soft! Try getting comfy on this surface!

Reef

The beach at the Prima Cala (for more photos click here , here and here) has some sections of flat reefs, like these, a wide section of beach lined with large white pebbles (about the size of a potato) and a tiny, tiny area of sand.

Prima Cala, again

I love the Prima Cala beach in the winter. It's a pretty little inlet and without all the crowds you can appreciate the size of the sea and the sky.

Pink and Blue

This photo was taken at the Prima Cala, a public beach, with my back to the sea, looking inland toward the town.

Along the bottom right you see the perimeter walls of the Paolo Poli stadium which is home to the Molfetta Calcio soccer team, includes track and field facilities and the two clay tennis courts of the Molfetta Tennis Club. The stadium was built in 1923, the bleachers were added in 1953 and a "modern lighting system" was installed in 1994.

Paolo Poli was a soldier from Molfetta who died in the First World War. It seems his father either donated or sold this piece of land, where he previously had a glassworks, for the construction of the stadium, on the condition that it be named after his son.

* Breaking news...we are having snow flurries this morning in Molfetta! That's very unusual for us!

Intersection

This is the intersection at the foot of Via 25 Aprile, a four-lane road (that's big for us around here!). If you continue straight on through the intersection, you will arrive at the Prima Cala public beach that I featured in photos this past week.

Sometimes people don't quite make the curve, as you can see (if you click on the photo to enlarge it) from the condition of the road signs. One day a friend's brakes went out and she crashed into the two boxes (just beyond the first car in the right lane) and knocked out the traffic lights. She was fine, but long weeks passed before the lights were fixed...

Prima Cala...deserted

This is the only decent beach left within city limits. In the summer it is jam-packed with sunbathers and swimmers. In the past it was clean and only *too* crowded on August weekends. But it has been literally garbage-strewn for the past two years. People don't tend to clean up after themselves and the city garbage department has not been doing its job very well.

It's nice to see it clean and empty.
