Pavement

The streets in the older sections of town are paved with "chianche" or large rectangular stones. The stones are chipped on the top surface to provide more grip for cars and pedestrians, but when it's been raining (like this morning) I can assure you from personal experience that they are quite treacherous. I have taken a dive several times. Luckily I have never caused myself serious bodily harm, just massive levels of embarrassment!

it almost looks like melted chocolate chips on top.

Looks almost like some of that 'poor man's marble' very common in the north of Italy as well. Slippery as hell!

Same problem in few places here, mainly when it rains. The worst thing is that now they are covering the stones with tar.

We have the same problem here with the cobblestone steets in the older parts of town. Interesting texture.

Bricks and cobblestones are the absolute worst for promoting embarrassment -:)
