A friend tells me this is the flower for the "lampasciuolo," which is the root of the plant. These are a local plant and supposedly are an aphrodisiac. Most people I know just get gas when they eat them, though!

It looks like a cardoon, an artichoke-type flower. Beautiful.
Let's see: Purple pineapple? Mauve marchesa? Flower between the rocks?
