Ferrovie Appulo Lucane

This is the main train station of a transportation company that runs trains and buses through the Apulia and Basilicata regions. This station is located in the center of Bari and I think it's interesting that the tracks are raised. Below the tracks you see here on the right are shops and offices. I imagine they have noise and vibration issues!

Strike!

This is a photo of what I did NOT do today. I did not get on the regional train heading south to Bari to go to work. I would have if I could have, but I couldn't so I didn't! There is a train strike today. Normally when there's a strike, service is guaranteed until 9 a.m. and then you are on your own till 6 p.m. I am usually able to get into the city by train and then return home by bus. But today even the trains at 8 a.m. were suppressed.

So, no work for me today, pity...

Acquario 9893

Spotted this very shiny train in the station in Bari this morning. Not only is it equipped with extremely efficient mirrored windows, but its surface is so clean that it reflects as effectively as the windows!

Acquario means both "Aquarius" (the zodiac sign) and "aquarium" (where you keep your pet fish) and it seemed to me that the people on the platform looked like they were in a fish bowl!

All Gassed Up

This plain, but functional structure is the methane gas distributor in Molfetta. It is located outside of town in the countryside, as all methane gas distributors are. (Risk of explosion? I don't want to know...)

Our car runs on what they call Bi-Power, meaning it can use either regular gasoline or methane. Methane, for the moment, costs a lot less than what you pay for regular gas, the price of which keeps going up, up, up. As of yesterday, the average price for a litre of unleaded in Italy was €1.42. Those of you in the States keep in mind that a litre is only a quarter of a gallon, so you have to multiply that price by 4 to make a comparison...imagine paying $5.68 a gallon!

Unfortunately, methane prices have also been rising recently. Yesterday's average price nationally was €.92.

That's why I take the train to work...

Molfetta Station

This is the entrance to the Molfetta train station. You can go either north or south from here, up or down the coast. Most trains run the Bari-Foggia route, but some go as far south as Lecce and as far north as Milan. I catch the train here to go to work in Bari. The trains are usually pretty reliable and run more or less on time (a relatively flexible concept around here!). They are not clean, but they are affordable and safe, so I'm not complaining. For tales of some adventures I've had on the train click on this link.

(If you click on the photo to enlarge it, you can see the reflection of the green shutters on the building across the street!)
